About The Archive

A curated digital archive preserving the patches, insignia, and challenge coins of Maryland public safety agencies.

Mission

The Purpose of the Archive

Maryland Patches was created to document and preserve the visual identity of public safety agencies throughout the state. From county sheriff’s offices and municipal police departments to state agencies, specialty units, and commemorative challenge coins, each item reflects a distinct part of Maryland’s public safety heritage.

This archive is intended to be more than a gallery. It is a structured record, organized in a way that makes the collection easier to explore, understand, and preserve over time. By presenting patches and coins by county, agency, and type, the site helps tell a broader story about service, identity, and place.

Collection Scope

What the Archive Preserves

03

Agency Heritage

Why It Matters

More Than Uniform Insignia

Patches and challenge coins are visual records of agency identity, local pride, service traditions, and historical change. Designs shift over time, units are created or retired, and symbols often reflect the culture and geography of the communities they represent.

Preserving these items helps document a side of Maryland public safety history that is often overlooked. Taken together, they form a statewide record of local identity and institutional memory.

Project History

A Project Revisited

Maryland Patches first took shape in late 2000 as an effort to document and preserve the visual history of public safety insignia across the state. From the beginning, the goal was to create more than a gallery. It was to establish a lasting archive of patches, coins, and agency identity tied to Maryland’s public safety heritage.

After a period of pause, the project has reemerged in the present day through its Instagram presence at @marylandpatches. This return marks a continuation of the original mission, with renewed focus on building a curated, statewide record of Maryland public safety history.

Archive Standards

Curatorial Approach

The archive is built with an emphasis on documentation, presentation, and long-term clarity. Items are organized deliberately so that each county, agency, and category feels part of a larger record rather than an isolated collection.

The goal is to present Maryland public safety insignia with respect and consistency while continuing to expand the archive over time. As new patches, coins, and historical variations are added, the collection becomes more useful not only to collectors, but to anyone interested in the heritage and visual identity of Maryland public safety agencies.
