Project History
A Project Revisited
Maryland Patches first took shape in late 2000 as an effort to document and preserve the visual history of public safety insignia across the state. From the beginning, the goal was to create more than a gallery. It was to establish a lasting archive of patches, coins, and agency identity tied to Maryland’s public safety heritage.
After a period of pause, the project has reemerged in the present day through its Instagram presence at @marylandpatches. This return marks a continuation of the original mission, with renewed focus on building a curated, statewide record of Maryland public safety history.

Curatorial Approach
The archive is built with an emphasis on documentation, presentation, and long-term clarity. Items are organized deliberately so that each county, agency, and category feels part of a larger record rather than an isolated collection.
The goal is to present Maryland public safety insignia with respect and consistency while continuing to expand the archive over time.
